The First Sixteen (Litmus)
Creative Process:
What inspired the initial idea for this song? Was it a specific moment, person, or feeling?
Learning that spiders don’t be inside houses with mold because it’s bad for their webs. This then led to me connecting how Texas and specifically Houston being as humid as it is can cause mold in houses. This jumpstarted the lyric process bringing the line “Must be this air down south”.
How did the creative process for this song differ from others you’ve worked on?
It started with a random fact about spiders avoiding moldy houses and I focused on having fun with the writing process by sharing my thoughts indirectly by giving the characteristics of what I’m saying and letting the listeners put 2+2 together.
Were there any unexpected challenges or breakthroughs while making this track?
Yeah I learned that when I started the session to record in my room that I should’ve set the BPM of the instrumental so that Detre could have more control of mixing the beat and my vocals.
Themes and Message:
What’s the core message or emotion you hope listeners take away from this song?
Embrace yourself. I want the listeners to feel how they can’t escape from themselves. You will either have to accept you’re capable of more but rather do what others expect of you or you’re going to be the person that shows them a better version greater than even you can imagine.
Are there any hidden meanings or personal symbols woven into the lyrics or production?
There’s plenty, that’s what inspired me to create the first sixteen.
How does this song reflect where you are in your life or career right now?
In the making of Litmus, what it reflects are the expectations of maturing as an adult that led me to running from the music through frustration and pressures to fit the image of what success looks like to others but took what I learned and applied to building myself through the music.
Production and Collaboration:
How did you decide on the soundscape and arrangement for this song?
Dorian made the beat and it connected with me so I started writing but decided it would fit the lyrics I already had for litmus that I wrote off a Youtube beat.
Did you collaborate with anyone on this track? How did their input shape the final version?
I recorded at home so there wasn’t much Dorian or Detre could mold but I’ll be recording final versions at the studio with them
Are there any unique sounds or techniques used in the production that you’re particularly proud of?
I enjoy the vibe the beat gives because it reminds me of Stranger Things
Future Vision:
How does this song fit into the bigger picture of your music or personal journey?
The big picture i want to paint is a journey of progression from being someone trapped behind the world to leading it.
What’s one thing you learned from making this track that you want to carry forward?
Create my lyrics to be fun to listen to and recite and be indirect so the listener can plug their moments into.
If this song were a stepping stone, where do you see it leading you next?
Understanding the flow of the process from idea to the listener so I can teach others no matter the industry.
Creating a world from this song for fans to experience.
The First Sixteen
– Litmus –
Must be this air down south
Need white tops
To keep the kids up out of this
Meaning:
The urge to keep pursuing a dream comes off as crazy and I blame the air down south for me needed to take medicine for this. (Hence the white tops to keep the kids up out of this.)
Clouds like popcorn
Dreads sprinkle on shag carpet
Mixing with minivans
Meaning:
This refers to life closing in on me in so the clouds are like the ceiling in some houses that have that popcorn surface that my dreads rub off into the carpet mixing in with the medicine pills I’m taking to help against dreaming
Hearing my neighbor with same problems
Heard cause he sought for himself
With something else
Shit I’d do the same if wasn’t afraid
Of loud noises
Meaning:
Refers to how even the person next to you may have a dream but are working against themselves for expectations of others. Going against the norm can cause a lot of explaining and having to hear others doubts rejections etc and that can cause issues within yourself that make you resent others doubt yourself and feel alone. That can be loud which is what I mean when I say loud noises
Anything preventing these symptoms
I feel worsen
Keeping me spiraled and squeezed
Fully loaded
Meaning:
This refers to being stuck in the middle of my life spiraling and the tension of being in a cocked back position to building the life.
